Many different types of souls exist. Some are exalted but can't teach others, some are great scholars but internally, the struggle continues. These two archetypes are known as the 8 princes connected to the 8 nights of Channukah. This level is higher than the 7 shepherds. The princes emanate from the hidden worlds, their awareness is hidden and they can't transmit knowledge to others, shepherds, on the other hand, emanate from revelation and are able to influence others. The princes, cabalistically, emanate from the first 8 hairs of the Arikh Anpin, which radiate divine pleasure whereas the shepherds come from the last hairs of Arikh Anpin corresponding to divine intellect and soul powers.
In the struggle leading up to Chanukkah, the Greeks defiled the consecrated oil. This act had its analog in the Jews' corrupted way of thinking: chochmah and bimah. And in order to fix it, a revelation had to be brought in which was beyond intellect. This is similar to Succos except on Succos, the light came (comes) through our efforts. Because of the similarities, Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel debate if the sacrifices should be brought in a decreasing or increasing way.
