How to avoid casualties

Excerpt from a talk by the Lubavitcher Rebbe,  July 1982.

" There is no need for even one solider to enter in deeper into Beirut because even simple people see with their physical eyes that they (IDF) can make a pile (of ruble) from the entire are of Beirut. And they (the civilains) should be given 5 minutes (before the invasion) to evacuate, not 26 hours!

There is ample time in those 5 minutes for all those that are there (in Beirut) to evacuate from this area in Beirut or to leave Beirut (entirely) and no one will disturb them. Those that oppose this . . There are a few that are noisemakers and the 2-3 people that have he power to carry this out in one moment . . And in a way that would not cost a single Jewish wounded person, and certainly this would avoid even one single casualty.

And more, so it will avoid even a single wounded and casualty from the 2nd side (Arabs). They will see that they (the IDF) are sincere (and serious). It's up to the IDF to act seriously!

Ben Stein: 'Jew Hatred' Exists 'in the Media'

The mainstream media exhibit a disturbing malice for Jews that smacks of anti-Semitism, says  actor, economist and commentator Ben Stein

"There's just a certain amount of Jew hatred in the media, especially in the elite media, that cannot be overcome or explained away,'' Stein said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show.''

"The media in this country for a very long time has been contemptuous of Jews and contemptuous of Jewish life," Stein said.

"This was true during the Holocaust, when the media was largely controlled by old, lying, wealthy, white Protestant males, and it's true now when it's controlled by mostly left-wingers.''

Stein, a former speechwriter for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford and an actor in such films as "Ghostbusters II,'' said media defenders try to "pretend it's not anti-Semitism, it's really anti-Israel, but it's really anti-Semitism.''

Just as upsetting is the fact that Jews themselves have key positions in today's media, he said.

"The media likes to portray Jews as bullies and murderers and . . . it's kind of amazing to me, because so much of the media is Jewish,'' he said.

"Some of that media is very, very good. I mean, I look at people like [The Weekly Standard founder] Bill Kristol, he's absolutely fabulous. But there's a deep-seated self-hatred, especially [among] the New York City elite media.

"They want to show they're not Jewish by being anti-Israel, and it's not going to work. We know they're Jewish and we know that they're not being fair to their own people, but they'll keep doing it.''

Stein said the media has unfairly slammed Israel for its military strikes against Hamas, which last week fired rockets at key Israeli cities.

"We're supposed to think there's something wrong with them for defending their country,'' said Stein, who is also a Newsmax contributor.

"Every story about the war in Gaza should begin with 'Hamas started it, Hamas endlessly refuses to have a ceasefire.'

"Hamas could have an incredibly prosperous and happy, peaceful partnership with Israel, and they don't, they prefer to fight, they prefer to kill.''

Stein lashed out at Secretary of State John Kerry for his sarcastic off-camera remark about Israel's military strike against Hamas in Gaza as "a hell of a pinpoint operation.''

"Terrible, shocking, shocking. Kerry is a perfect example of everything we have talked about, because Kerry is Jewish – ethnically,'' Stein said.

"Yet he is so eager to push an image as a WASP gentile and to look down his nose on Israel. He is sort of a perfect specimen of the kind of behavior we're talking about.''

Tunnels Matter More Than Rockets to Hamas

Tunnels Matter More Than Rockets to Hamas

An Israeli tank in the shadows of a 'wadi' with other tanks on the ridge behind as they maneuver inside  near the border with the Gaza Strip.

Early in the clash, much of the drama was in the air. The Palestinian terrorist group launched hundreds of rockets and Israel responded by knocking down rockets in the sky with its Iron Dome and by bombing the rocket-launch sites in Gaza. But the real story has been underground. Hamas’s tunnels into Israel are potentially much more dangerous than its random rocket barrages.
Israel started a ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza on Thursday, intending to destroy Hamas’s tunnel network. The challenge became obvious on Saturday when eight Palestinian fighters wearing Israeli military uniforms emerged from a tunnel 300 yards inside Israel and killed two Israeli soldiers in a firefight. One of the Palestinian fighters was killed before the others fled through the tunnel back to Gaza.

Moshiach in 5775

The Alter Rebbe,  was on one occasion, the ba'al koreh, read a verse slightly incorrectly. It came out to mean that it will be in 5775 (in Parshas Pekudei) what should've been read as 1775.  He did so 3 or 4 times and was corrected each time. This was in Parshas Pekudei 38:28, which mentions the sum of 1775 talents collected. ואת האלף ושבע המאות וחמשה ושבעים Instead of reading the "hei" of "ha-elef" (the thousand) with a "patach", he read it with a "tzeirei" (which turns the letter "hei" into 5).

Vengeance

Reb Yoel Kahn: Hiskashrus Today

There are two general questions that are on everyone’s mind: (1) How can we connect ourselves to the Rebbe today when we can’t see the Rebbe? How especially can the young generation which has never seen the Rebbe have meaningful hiskashrus? (2) How does one become mekushar to the Rebbe? What exactly does that involve?

Putting religion on your résumé hurts your job chances — unless you’re Jewish

It was a big deal on AMC’s “Mad Men” when Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce hired Michael Ginsberg in season five. Hiring “the Jew,” as Roger Sterling referred to him, was an attempt to update the agency’s image in an era (1966) when those who clung to the notion that business was a WASPy boys’ club were on the wrong side of the generation gap – a potential problem for an ad firm looking to reach young consumers. “Turns out everybody’s got one now,” Sterling said, referring to Ginsberg.

Kashrut awakening: When a lapsed Catholic’s kid turns kosher

A  former Catholic grapples with how to feed his daughter, who’s turned to religion.

“I am not eating this,” my youngest daughter declared about a month ago, as if auditioning for the part of Veruca Salt. A plate of schnitzel, cottage cheese and couscous lay on the table, untouched by human hands (my kids have very poor table manners). “What’s the matter, not hungry?” I asked, keen to avoid a food fight with a 10-year-old. (Never start something you can’t win.) “No Daddy, I am hungry,” she moaned. “But I can’t eat this − it isn’t kosher.” Adrian Hennigan and his daughter Olivia Adrian Hennigan and his daughter Olivia / Photo by Adrian Hennigan When I was queuing up for the Holy Eucharist as a kid − they tasted of paper and melted on your tongue if you left them there long enough − I’d have said there’d be more chance of pigs flying than me having to take them off the menu on religious grounds. But life with children, unlike an episode of “Two and a Half Men,” is full of surprises.
