G-d's command to Avraham to leave his land and wander to an unnamed destination was considered one of his ten tests of faith. However, the Torah tells us that Lot accompanied Avraham on his praiseworthy journey - and Lot is certainly not renowned for his faith! Rather, people are given free choice in this world, but when G-d wishes to orchestrate an event of critical importance, He may remove the free choice and compel a person to make a specific decision. G-d made Lot feel compelled to accompany Avraham because G-d strongly desired to produce the light of Moshiach who descends from Lot. For the sake of Moshiach, G-d made the exception of overriding a person's free choice!
